Each week we’ll bring you guys a new album to check out.

Sometimes you can start to wonder how much one person and an acoustic guitar can really accomplish. The infinite amount of singer/songwriters can have you feeling that the whole genre is a bit stale. But have no fear…Mike Kinsella is here!

Kinsella’s solo project Owen started after the demise of the beloved American Football. He wanted a project where he had full creative control of everything from songwriting to cover art. His third full-length I Do Perceive is absolutely stunning. The music is what really sets Kinsella apart from your average singer/songwriter. Instead of using the guitar as a backing tool for his voice, Kinsella creates beautifully intricate melodies that work with his vocals. On the topic of his voice, it doesn’t quiver and shake, nor is it whiny and annoying. Kinsella’s voice has a quiet and welcoming quality to it that fits like a puzzle piece with his simplistic and heartfelt lyrics.

Thanks so much for checking out our first recommendation so please go and download it! Musically the album sounds very similar to what fans of the band have come to expect: very melodic, spacey post-rock. The band strays away a bit from this sound on "Glasgow Mega-Snake" where they opt for distorted guitars and a bit of built up chaotic fury. Mogwai also uses vocals a bit more prominently than expected. The songs "Acid Food", "Travel is Dangerous" and "I Chose Horses" all contain vocal parts, with the aforementioned song being the most notable as it contains spoken word lyrics in Japanese (from the vocalist of Envy) over a quiet piano driven background.

Mogwai is able to create some of the most incredible and beautiful music I have ever heard and you would be doing yourself a complete disservice if you didn't give their new record a listen!

-Sean Moran
